Discussion Forum: EU Computer Implemented Inventions
May 18, 2005

One of the most contentious intellectual property issues currently being debated is whether the European Union should adopt a new Directive concerning the patentability of Computer Implemented Inventions (CIIs).  While many organizations have begun information campaigns against the proposed Directive,  this Discussion Forum has been created to counter these efforts and provide a more balanced view on the various issues surrounding the EU CII Directive.

At Last: A European Patent Court Which May Come True - The European Patent Litigation Agreement

The European Patent Convention makes it possible for a patent to be filed and recognized in all countries that have signed onto the convention. Judges from signatory counties have also held meetings in order to remain abreast of issues in specific countries that could affect all of the members.

“Today at the beginning of the twenty-first century, few any longer doubt the importance of the creative industries as a source of national wealth.” In the United States alone the motion picture industry contributes tens of billions of dollars to the economy, and it does so with no government intervention and little government funding. Therefore, it is necessary to allow industries within the creative industries to patent products which they create in an effort to encourage them to continue to add to the economy.
