Intellectual Property and the Networked Economy
A Law, Policy, and Business Forum

Conference Summary and Agenda

Sao Paulo, Brazil
March 12, 2002

Brazil is the most networked country in South America:  Its big business community and growing population of consumers is taking to the Internet.  Business strategists see for the country new opportunities for electronic commerce, from business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), business-to-government (B2G), and government-to-citizen (G2C).  The future electronic marketplace depends on broadband capacity being constructed, e-commerce strategies being implemented by business and government, legal infrastructure regarding intellectual property rights being put in place.  Piracy of digital copyrighted works erodes the incentives for new digital product creation; misappropriation of trademarks and domain names on the Web erodes digital brand management.  Brazilian-American cooperation in bilateral, regional, and multilateral institutional contexts with respect to intellectual property laws and policies will crucially turn digital and broadband potentials into electronic marketplace realities.

The policy forum is jointly sponsored by:

  • The International Intellectual Property Institute, Washington, DC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational, research, and advisory organization focused on intellectual property law, policy, and public administration;
  • The McDonough School of Business, a professional school of Georgetown University, Washington, DC;
  • The Getulio Vargas Foundation, Sao Paulo, Brazil, a nonprofit business and economic research and educational institution.

This policy forum brings together some 120 leading Brazilian and American technologists, business people, government policymakers, lawyers, and academics to discuss these vital issues.
