Exploring the relationships between patents, pharmaceutical innovation and public health

Untangling complex relationships that drive the development, pricing and accessibility of new drugs is key to advancing public health systems in both industrialized and developing countries. How can profit-making pharmaceutical companies recoup development costs, generate profits and act with social responsibility?

Limited to approximately 200 participants, Intellectual Property and International Public Health offers a select group of healthcare professionals from around the world a unique opportunity to speak candidly about today’s most pressing issues. This conference promises to shed new light on several vital issues dominating the international public health stage.

At this conference, participants will:
  • Explore the relationship of the patent system to new drug development
  • Examine how patents impact the pricing of drugs
  • Evaluate the differences in the markets for patented drugs among developed countries
  • Learn about the relationship of publicly funded research to new drug development
  • Consider possible solutions to the problem of providing patented drugs to patients in poor countries
  • Explore the role of patents in research directed at medicines needed in developing countries

Hear Health Ministers from countries such as Jordan, Mexico, Uganda and the Czech Republic express global views on balancing intellectual property requirements with public health needs and financial constraints.

Select conference topics include:

  • Exploring patents and innovation through public/private partnerships
  • Bringing new medicines to the marketplace: regulatory and financial issues
  • Examining the generic industry and its role and co-existence with the patented pharmaceutical industry
  • Discussing the impact of regulatory and pricing policies in developed countries on global innovation and investment in patent-based research
  • Finding socially responsible strategies for improving the public health infrastructure in developing countries
  • Debating national versus international exhaustion of rights and tiered pricing of patented pharmaceuticals.
