Fairness in Drug Patenting: The Role of Congress

Discussion Overview

Washington, D.C.
June 10, 1999

8:30 am – 12:00 pm

Co-Sponsored by the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute

Congressional staff and other interested parties joined a distinguished forum of judges, Members of Congress, and former U.S. public health and patent officials for a topical discussion on restoring fairness to the drug patent approval process.  Our experienced participants provided diverse perspectives on existing inequities in the application of pharmaceutical research and development incentives.  Participants also explored steps Congress could take to assure a rational and fair process that encourages the development of new medical treatments while providing access to low-cost drugs.
